An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 20 1/2" x 27 1/2" [52 x 70 cm]) (Learn More)

Keep This Hand of Mercy at its Work, the 1918 U.S. World War I (WWI) Home Front poster ("War Fund Week"; "May 6th - 13th"; "One Hundred Million Dollars") encouraging citizens to help the American Red Cross, and featuring P.G. Morgan art of an arm reaching down from the sky and protecting wounded soldiers and refugees from harm. Apparently they were attempting to raise one hundred million dollars in a single week, which seems like a staggering amount of money for that time period! The poster was originally printed with dates under the words "War Fund Week", but the poster was overprinted with black over that area (no doubt those original dates were changed, and probably at the last minute). Note that the only other example of this poster we have seen is the one in the Library of Congress collection, and that example also has overprinting over the date area at bottom left, and we don't know if there are surviving posters that do not have this overprinting.
Artist: P.G. Morgan

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had tears and a small oval area of paper loss in the right 6" of the top border, with some tears scattered down the right edge of the poster, extending into the edges of the background area. There were some tiny areas of paper loss in a small area of the arm, 2" to the right of the "k" of "work". Otherwise, the poster was in pretty nice condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
