An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World!, the classic 1951 Christian Nyby science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller ("The Thing from another world!"; "How did it get here?"; "Natural or Supernatural?"; "Howard Hawks' Astounding Movie"; "Look out... it's The Thing from another world!"; produced by Howard Hawks; based on the story by John W. Campbell, best known for being the editor of Astounding Science Fiction!) starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Dewey Martin, Paul Frees, John Dierkes, Eduard Franz, James Arness (in the title role as The Thing From Another World!), William Self, and Billy Curtis (as the miniature "Thing" in the final sequence when the monster appears to shrink). Note that this movie had a very unusual poster campaign, where the letters of the title were made to look like body parts ("blood and guts"!), with wires coming off of the letters. Almost all the posters had this basic design. The pressbook calls all of them "teaser" posters and says "This display material was designed for an advance teaser campaign, as well as for general use". So obviously, they intentionally wanted to have the posters not reveal much about the movie, as a way to get people interested and get them into the theater. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that many of the original posters from this classic sci-fi movie have only the title on them (but of course, it is the classic title composed of "blood and guts"). This half-sheet, however, has both that title image, plus a montage of seven images of the stars of the movie! That causes the inserts and half-sheets to sell for a considerable amount of money, and they are rarely offered for sale or auction (but remarkably, in this Halloween auction, we are auctioning both this style B half-sheet and an insert, in separate auctions!). Also note that this poster has never been folded! Some pre-1970 half-sheet posters were folded twice horizontally at the poster exchange, while some were not. It can be difficult to find an unfolded example of many pre-1970 half-sheet posters (note that most post-1970 half-sheets were NOT folded, so they are pretty much only found unfolded, and therefore this does not apply to those half-sheets). Condition: good. The poster was never folded. It has many creases and tears around the edges, with some areas of paper loss in the right blank border. Someone put pieces of brown paper tape on the back of most of the left and right borders. They also put a 3" piece of paper tape on the back of the middle right, but that was not put there for a restoration purpose. There are creases in the right 2" of the poster and some scattered in the upper left, caused from it being roughly handled while it was rolled. But other than the above defects, the poster is in surprisingly good condition. What is especially nice is that the colors in the poster are quite "fresh", indicating it was likely not displayed very much! If I owned this wonderful (and pretty rare) poster, I would surely have one of the best restorers perform restoration to it (either with or without backing it). Because most of the defects are in the borders, and few affect the image, it will look really wonderful after proper restoration, and it will not require a lot of restoration anywhere within the image.
