An Original Vintage Theatrical Style A Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the classic 1939 Alfred L. Werker detective mystery crime thriller sequel ("Based on the play 'Sherlock Holmes' by William Gillette with the permission of the executors of the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle") starring Basil Rathbone (in the title role as Sherlock Holmes), Nigel Bruce (as Dr. Watson), Ida Lupino, Alan Marshal, Terry Kilburn, George Regas, Henry Stephenson, and E.E. Clive. Note that this is the second Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movie, and it was released by 20th Century Fox, as was their first film, "The Hound of the Baskervilles". All subsequent Rathbone & Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies were released by Universal! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned three one-sheets (30 years ago, 19 years ago, and 15 years ago), seven lobby cards, and some stills from this movie (and NO other movie paper) until we received this half-sheet, which we have never auctioned before! We are also auctioning an insert, which we have also never before auctioned, in a separate auction. Note that this poster could possibly be rolled, but we would much prefer that it be sent in a large flat package that measures approximately 24" x 30" (but it can be combined with other posters the same size, including ones that could be rolled). Please bear the expense of a large package in mind before bidding on this poster. This is because of the value of the poster and because it has been gel backed, and rolling it could lessen its condition, which would be a great shame, given the rarity and the value of the poster! What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: very good. The poster had tiny creases and scuffs on parts of the folds, with tiny staple holes in the corners and a small tear in the top right blank corner and in the center of the bottom blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the poster (meaning they backed the poster onto a gel material) and they then performed excellent restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the poster still exactly looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but the poster displays really well! Learn More about condition grades
