An Original 1944 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium; see below) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 11 1/2" x 16 3/4" [29 x 43 cm]) (Learn More) Across the Pacific, the 1942 John Huston & Vincent Sherman World War II (WWII) romantic spy espionage adventure thriller ("Boy! when Bogart boffs those Japs... or when he kisses Mary Astor you can feel it Across the Pacific"; "From the Saturday Evening Post serial by Robert Carson"; based on the story "Aloha Means Good-bye" by Robert Garson; set in the days right before Pearl Harbor, about a U.S. Army officer who is court-martialed, and he boards a Japanese ship heading to the Panama Canal and discovers a Japanese plot to blow it up) starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, Charles Halton, Victor Sen Yung, and Frank Wilcox. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Belgian poster, which is from October 1944, weeks after Belgium was liberated from the Nazis! We HAVE previously auctioned three examples of Belgian posters that we, at that time, thought were first release, but now that this poster has been consigned, we know they are very early re-releases. Like this poster, they were printed on the back of parts of maps, but this poster has a Warner Bros. logo in the top left, and those posters have Sheaf A.M.M. in that same area, and that company apparently did very early Belgian re-releases in the 1940s right after World War II, likely around 1946 to 1948. But the poster offered here is the very rare first release Belgian poster! This poster is printed on the back of a map or part of another poster! Why is this? During World War II, there were massive paper shortages in Belgium. Where Belgian movie posters had previously been approximately 23" x 32", there was such a shortage of paper that not only did they often have to print them on the back of other posters or maps, but during World War II, the size of the posters shrank dramatically, with some of them as small as 11" x 15". This situation continued even after World War II, until around 1946 or 1947, when they began making Belgian movie posters in a size of roughly 14" x 22", which became the standard size, and continued for decades! The posters like these that are from during World War II or immediately after, and which are printed in a small size (often on the back of other posters or maps) are INCREDIBLY rare (surely they did not print many, and surely many of them were soon recycled themselves! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster printed on the back of part of a map (see above). Because much of the poster has light colors, the map printing strongly shows through to the front in many areas. In addition, there was once a snipe glued to the bottom of the poster, and paper remnants were left in that area. The poster also was folded and had some wear on the folds. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, but the restorer did not attempt to address the bleed-through. Obviously, one would prefer to find an example of this poster that did not have the bleed-through issue, but not only is this the only first Belgian release of this poster we have ever auctioned, so it is incredibly rare and it is unlikely one would ever find another, but even if one ever did, it would almost surely also be printed on the back of a map and have the exact same issue. However, please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this very significant defect. Learn More about condition grades
