eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result c041 BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ three-sheet movie poster '62Lancaster,Frankenheimer Date Sold 2/12/2008Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Three-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 41" x 81") (Learn More) Birdman of Alcatraz (released in other English-speaking countries as "The Man of Alcatraz"), the classic 1962 John Frankenheimer Kansas Leavenworth prison convict crime biography melodrama ("Inside the rock called Alcatraz they tried to chain a volcano they called 'The Bird Man'!"; "Based on the book by Tom Gaddis"; the true story of double murderer Robert Stroud, sentenced to life in prison, who, after years of anger, adopts a baby bird, and ends up becoming one of the world's foremost bird experts, all done while serving his life sentence in Leavenworth Prison) starring Burt Lancaster (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Robert Franklin Stroud), Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Neville Brand, Edmond O'Brien ("as Tom Gaddis"), Betty Field, and Telly Savalas (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; billed as "Tony Savalas"). Note that if you only knew of Robert Stroud from this movie, you would think him a pretty saintly man who made a few youthful mistakes and suffered the rest of his life because of a system that refused to forgive him. But actually, that is a fiction that was created for the film. If you are interested in knowing more, you can easily look up his real life story, which is far more complicated and depressing than how it was presented in the movie. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has a snipe correcting the spelling of Mr. Savalas' first name from "Tony" to "Telly". Also note that we have seen other examples of this poster where the snipe solely covers Mr. Savalas' first name, but this snipe makes his name larger, and also that of Betty Field (we have also seen a third version of this snipe that covers over the name of screenwriter Guy Trosper [who also produced the film]). This three-sheet was printed in 2 sections. Condition: fair. Apparently, someone at the theater that used this poster did not feel that they had made the title distinctive enough, so they used blue paint to write the title again very large in the background area at the top of the poster! I have no idea how easy or difficult it would be to remove this blue paint. There is transfer of the blue paint to many areas of the image (this occurred after the poster was fully folded). Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this very significant defect, or are willing to pay to have it properly restored! Learn More about condition grades
