An Original Vintage Theatrical Japanese 8 3/4" x 10 3/4" [22 x 27 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Varan the Unbelievable, the 1962 Jerry A. Baerwitz & Ishiro Honda Japan/U.S. kaiju battling rubbery monsters science fiction (sci-fi) dinosaur horror thriller ("From a world below, it came to terrorize - to destroy - to revenge!"; "For centuries it slept far below the sea until modern man... Ever searching... Ever probing deeper into the unknown... Disturbed its peace... Then it rose... From the depths... Slowly... Surely... Unrelentingly... To wreak its vengeance... To kill... To destroy a civilization that wanted to know too much!") starring Myron Healy, Tsuruko Kobayashi, Clifford Kawada, Derick Shimatsu, Kozo Nomura, "and a cast of thousands". Note that this is a heavily-altered version of the 1958 Japanese film titled Daikaiju Baran. For this U.S. release, a new story was written by Sid Harris and Baerwitz directed new footage with Myron Healey interacting with Japanese-American actors. Only 15 minutes of the original Japanese footage was used in the U.S. version and we consider them separate movies.

Important Added Info: NOTE THAT WE DON'T KNOW FOR SURE WHAT MOVIE THIS JAPANESE STILL IS FROM, BUT WE THINK IT IS POSSIBLY "GODZILLA RETURNS". If anyone knows what movie this is from, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this is a "country of origin" still for this Japanese movie!

UPDATED 10/27/2010: Note that a knowledgeable collector pointed out that this still is from the film "Varan the Unbelievable" and NOT "Godzilla Returns". Please do not bid thinking it is from "Godzilla Returns". However, given that there is a faint TOHO stamp on the back of the still, we think it is certainly a Japanese still and not a U.S. one.

Condition: good. The still was glued to a mat and there are glue stains on the back of much of the still and there is slight surface paper loss on the back caused when it was removed from the mat. But the stains and the surface paper loss do not affect the front, and there is only slight wear on the borders. It does appear as though someone (possibly the studio) added the monster's teeth and darkened the area around it's eye.
