An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded German Export Movie Poster (measures 27 1/4" x 41 1/4" [69 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) Die Dame Mit Der Maske (released in the U.S. as "The Lady with the Mask"), the 1928 Wilhelm Thiele German silent mystery melodrama (based on a story by Henrik Galeen) starring Max Gulstorff, Arlette Marchal, Vladimir Gajdarov, Heinrich George, Dita Parlo, and Paul Horbiger. We were unable to find even a plot summary of this movie, but it included two stars who went on to great notoriety, Heinrich George and Dita Parlo. Heinrich George was a major German star who fully supported the Nazi regime. He was arrested in 1945 by the Soviets, and they reported that he had died "after an appendix operation". But in 1994, his remains were found, and it was discovered that the once quite heavy man had died of starvation in the Russian concentration camp! Several years after this movie, Dita Parlo had great success in two French movies, "L'Atalante" in 1934 and "La Grande Illusion" in 1937. She came to the United States, and was going to be in Orson Welles' version of Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", but that movie fell through. Some of her other movies include: Justice is Done, Ultimatum, and Men behind Bars NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this German movie, is printed in an unusual way. It has a large yellow area at the bottom that is blank, and the title of the movie is written in German in small letters in the bottom right with "1SH" after it. This was because the clever people at UFA did not want to have to print separate posters for every language! So they would send these one-sheets to each country and then that country could overprint the bottom area with the title and credits in their own language. They had to choose some size to make it, and they chose the U.S. one-sheet size, 27" x 41" (slightly bigger). There are very few German movie posters from before World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums. Condition: very good. The poster has small separation at the bottom crossfold. It was folded in half an extra time and there are creases on the folds. There is slight darkening around the edges of the poster. But it has survived really well considering its age, and it is not fragile, which is a big plus! Learn More about condition grades
