An Original Vintage Unfolded World War I Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 41 1/2" [70 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) 4 Minute Men, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) war poster ("A message from the Government at Washington"; "A message from Washington") featuring H. Devitt Welsh art with a large space at the bottom for a message. Note that the 4 (Four) Minute Men were a group of volunteers authorized by President Woodrow Wilson to give four minute speeches on topics provided to them by the Committee on Public Information! We are aware of two versions of this poster, one with a Revolutionary War era man in the lower right by Independence Hall, and the other with an image of the Capitol Building. Artist: H. Devitt Welsh Important Added Info: As noted above, this poster was designed with a blank rectangular area at the bottom, where those using the poster could put information about the 4 minute speech that was being delivered. In the case of this poster, it was apparently never used, because that area is blank. Note that this is one of 78 very rare posters (including 53 WWI and WWII posters and 18 stage play posters) that mostly date from 1888 to 1945. These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these 78 posters (which even includes a remarkable 1873 P.T. Barnum poster from his "Traveling World's Fair")! Note that in June of 2016, we auctioned around 100 posters that were from this same archive. The 78 posters we are currently auctioning represent most of the remaining posters from this remarkable find (we certainly wish there were lots more, but unfortunately there are not, so this is likely your last opportunity to acquire these great rarities!). Condition: good. The poster was mounted onto a thin linen (likely soon after it was printed) with no excess. There are many tears and small areas of paper loss around the edges, but they are almost all in the blank borders. There are creases and smudges scattered throughout the poster. The poster can be removed from the thin linen and properly backed, but bear this expense in mind before placing a bid on this very rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
