An Original Vintage Hardcover Movie Souvenir Program Book (measures 5" x 6 3/4" [13 x 17 cm]; 32 pages) (Learn More)

Hell's Angels, the classic 1930 Howard Hughes World War I (WWI) England Royal Flying Corps military airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle melodrama ("Howard Hughes' Thrilling Air Spectacle"; "Howard Hughes' Amazing Air Spectacle"; "The First Multi-Million Dollar Talking Picture"; "Howard Hughes' thrilling multi-million dollar - air spectacle"; produced by Howard Hughes; about two brothers at Oxford who join the RAF when World War I starts, and they both fall for the same beautiful girl, but when they go off on a bombing mission, they return to find her with yet a third man) starring Jean Harlow, Ben Lyon, James Hall, John Darrow, Lucien Prival, and Douglas Gilmore. Note that filming on this movie originally started in 1927, and it was being filmed as a silent, and Greta Nissen had the lead female role. But the movie took a very long time to make, and by that point, sound had taken over Hollywood, and producer/director Howard Hughes made the unusual decision to entirely re-shoot the movie with sound. And since Greta Nissen had a strong Norwegian accent (which made no difference in silent movies, but obviously was terrible for sound), and since Jean Harlow had come along, Hughes replaced Nissen with Harlow, which was the greatest break of Harlow's career, but heartbreaking for Nissen, who continued in movies without a big break until 1937, when she retired!

Important Added Info: Leave it to Howard Hughes to create an incredibly deluxe hardcover book devoted to this movie (but it is a small book, measuring 5" x 6 3/4")! It has a "Western Lithograph Co." and "Los Angeles" printed in small letters on the final page, and the first page gives information about the movie and says that "This super-spectacle is now running simultaneously, at an admission price of $2.50, at two of the leading two-a-day theatres on Broadway, New York, where it is having the greatest success ever achieved by any entertainment". After that are full page and smaller images of the stars and Mr. Hughes, and also scenes from the movie, as well as full cast and crew credits, including the many, many pilots. Jean Harlow gets a full page early in the book, and a picture with Ben Lyon late in the book, wearing that sexiest dress, and the text opposite says that she is "Filmdom's newest and most sensational young star", and it has half a page on her, including saying that she "is a platinum blonde, strikingly beautiful, and only 19 years of age". Because it contains reviews and talks about the theaters it is playing at, it was clearly published after the movie opened, but while it was still in its very limited first release at two theaters. We have no idea how this book was used or distributed. It has no price on it, so we don't think it is a program book. We wonder if it was a special book sent to exhibitors to entice them to book the movie when it would become available, but anything is possible. If anyone knows more about this book, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and five interior 2-page spreads from this book. You can use these images to determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are some other pages you are not seeing.

Condition: very good. The book has very minor scuffs on the covers and in the bottom corners of the front and back cover, but otherwise, it is in really excellent condition! It has a protective plastic sleeve protecting the gold covers. Note that we photographed the cover through the protective sleeve, so it looks like it has far more scuffing than it does. It is really just a minor amount of scuffing.
