An Original 1958 (from the first release of this movie in Russia) Vintage Theatrical Folded Russian Movie Poster (measures 18 3/4" x 29 1/4" [48 x 74 cm]) (Learn More) Calle Mayor (released in the U.S. in 1958 as "The Lovemaker" and in other English-speaking countries as "Main Street"), the 1956 Juan Antonio Bardem Spanish/French romantic melodrama ("Desire smouldered within her and erupted as Blazing Passion in the arms of...'The Lovemaker'") starring Betsy Blair, Jose Suarez, Yves Massard, Dora Doll (billed as "and introducing Dora Doll voluptuous new personality") and Luis Pena. Note that star Betsy Blair had just one year earlier starred in the Academy Award Winning "Marty", but just a year later was appearing in this Spanish movie! What happened? She had been caught up in the Communist witch hunt a few years earlier (even though she was married to Gene Kelly!), and did not make any movies for four years prior to "Marty", and Gene Kelly got her that role through his influence. But producers refused to hire her for other parts, and she went to Europe and made a limited number of movies there. She also appeared in U.S. TV movies and guest starred on TV series. She divorced Kelly in 1957 and married director Karel Reisz, and was married to him for 40 years (until his passing). She passed away in 2009 at the age of 85.
