Date Sold 7/12/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 11 1/2" x 15 1/2" [29 x 39 cm]; 28 pages) (Learn More) Columbia Pictures 1936-37, the 1936 campaign book featuring images and information for upcoming Columbia movies for those years. In the early 1930s, Columbia published deluxe campaign books each year, but in 1935, they started their in house publication, "Columbia Mirror", and they made the studio yearbook for 1935-36 issue number 11 (July 29, 1935) of that magazine, even though the regular issues were only 12 or 16 pages. However, the following year, they again made a large standalone campaign book, and it seems they likely continued that the next few years (although only a few of those have ever surfaced). This campaign book has full-color and sepia pages, and there are many single pages on their top stars and single pages on upcoming movies. The highlight of the book is a full-color centerfold on Frank Capra's Lost Horizon, with signed James Montgomery Flagg art. Naturally, Frank Capra also received a full page at the beginning of the book. There is a great full-color page at the end for Color Rhapsody cartoons. Of special interest to Three Stooges collectors is a third of a page devoted to Three Stooges two-reel comedies, with great different art of Moe, Larry, and Curly (see our many images). Note that this campaign book comes from a newly discovered collection of 15 campaign books, which we are auctioning in 15 individual auctions. They belonged to a man who was a poster artist for a specific theater in the early 1930s, and he would receive these campaign books and then take ideas for posters from them! This meant that sometimes he removed a specific ad or a specific page or pages, so several of these 15 have one or the other defect (or both), which is always clearly noted in the condition section below. While it is sad that they are not in perfect condition, one can also focus on the fact that it is wonderful that he saved these at all, when most theater owners and employees simply threw them out after the movies have played, which accounts for their extreme rarity. Note that not only was he active at a time when many great movies were released, but he also saved some of the books that had the absolute best art, as is immediately apparent when you look at the 15 pressbooks in this collection (in their separate auctions). Condition: fair to good. There is one page that was roughly torn out, and there surely are a second and third page that were removed, because we have auctioned another example of this book that had six more pages. We can't say for certain which pages are missing, but if a movie is listed in the above description, and we did not picture it, then it may well be on one of the missing pages, so know that is a real possibility and bid accordingly. The great artwork ad for The Three Stooges is present, as is the great full-color two-page ad for Lost Horizon. There are light creases in the top 2" of all pages when someone tried to fit the book into a box that was too small. There is staining and some scratches on the front cover and some staining at the top of the first interior page. Learn More about condition grades
