An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic 1951 Robert Wise science fiction (sci-fi) alien-contact thriller ("From out of space.... a warning and an ultimatum!"; "Strange power from another planet menaces the Earth!"; from the story by Harry Bates; about a super intelligent alien visiting the Earth, and mankind mistrusts him without reason; he is able to "pass" as a human, and he visits the world's greatest scientist, and when he is injured and taken to a hospital, he is rescued by his robot Gort) starring Michael Rennie (as Klaatu), Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin (as Gort the Robot). Note that the unusual music heard in this movie was achieved through the use of the musical instrument called a theramin, and audiences loved the eerie sounds it made, and it became standard in many science fiction movies thereafter to use this instrument in the same way! The bottom 2 1/2" of the poster was trimmed off, which included all the printing below the black border and 1/4" of the solid black border. It also had 2" trimmed from the top blank border and 3/4" from the left blank border, and 3/4" from the right blank border (except for the bottom border, only blank white paper was trimmed off). It also had an oval-shaped area of paper loss at the middle crossfold that extended 4" in height and 2" in width at its widest points, and it was mostly in the background at the middle, but it slightly extended into the girl's hair and the end of the finger. It also had tiny paper loss at the other two crossfolds and surprisingly not much fold wear, with a few creases, small tears, and tiny paper loss. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Given the poster's significant defects, the person who did the restoration did a pretty nice job with all the image restoration, because it is surprisingly not very noticeable, except when you look fairly closely at it. But they made a choice with the restoration of the bottom 2 1/2", which is that they either took the bottom of a different 20th Century-Fox poster and then altered it to match what they thought should have been on the bottom of this poster, or they took blank paper and recreated what they thought was at the bottom of this poster. However, the small information printed below the black border on this poster is incorrect (they added an NSS number in the bottom right that not only does not go to this poster, but it actually goes to a poster from RKO, not 20th Century-Fox). Since it is solely below the image, one could choose to live with it, or certainly, one could have a different restorer repaint bottom small printing to match what is on the actual poster, or one could have the entire poster re-backed. While this poster will display pretty well on the new owner's wall, please bear all of the above in mind and look closely at our super-sized image before bidding on it.
