Date Sold 10/2/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Hand Painted Movie Poster (measures 28" x 38 1/2" [71 x 98 cm]) (Learn More) Casey at the Bat, the 1927 Monte Brice silent New York Major League Baseball sports comedy ("Story by Hector Turnbull"; very loosely based on the classic poem by Ernest Lawrence Thayer) starring Wallace Beery (in the title role as 'Home Run' Casey), Ford Sterling, Zasu Pitts, Sterling Holloway, and Spec O'Donnell. Note that this movie owes as much to the larger-than-life Babe Ruth as it does to the classic poem! In it, Casey is a mighty home run hitter, who is signed by the New York Giants, and he starts to live the high life, buying drinks for everyone and romancing showgirls. At the climax of the movie, he comes to bat, and just like the Casey of the poem, he strikes out, but it turns out that the ball was doctored, and the result of the game is overturned! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Lichty Important Added Info: Note that this is one of four original paintings that were created for a local theater in the 1920s. At that time, theaters would often hire local artists to create hand painted individual posters for newly released movies (the most famous of these was Batiste Madelena, who created hundreds of such posters for the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York, between 1924 and 1928). Many of these posters were painted on a heavy poster board, and they are often around a one-sheet size. This poster was created on a heavy board and must be sent in a very large flat package, so bear that cost of shipping in mind before placing a bid on this poster. Finally, note that the art is signed by "Lichty" in 1928, which means that this 1927 movie made it to that theater in 1928, but while still on its first release. Condition: fair to good. The painting is on a heavy poster board and will need to be shipped flat. It is very fragile, more so around the edges, and it has cracks, tears, small paper loss, and surface paper loss around the edges. It has some scuffs and smudges scattered through the painting. It definitely needs restoration, but afterward, it will look quite nice. But do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its condition defects, its need of restoration, and the cost of shipping it in a very large flat package. Learn More about condition grades
