An Original 1938 Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

La Grande Illusion (released in the U.S. in 1938 as "Grand Illusion"), the classic 1937 Jean Renoir French France Germany World War I (WWI) anti-war military prisoner of war (POW) melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; many people rightfully consider this movie to be one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim, Julien Carette (billed as "Carette"), Gaston Modot (billed as "Modot"), Georges Peclet (billed as "Peclet"), Marcel Dalio (billed as "Dalio"), and Jean Daste (billed as "Daste"). Note that this is also the rare case of a great movie that was recognized as being truly great right after it was made. It was the first foreign film ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, and it certainly deserved to win!

Important Added Info: Note that movie paper from the first release of this movie in 1938 is incredibly rare. We would suspect that means that it played ina very limited number of theaters in the U.S. (likely only arthouse theaters), but before receiving this one-sheet we had only auctioned five stills from the first U.S. release and NO other U.S. paper of any kind, so if you want a first release U.S. poster from this most classic movie, this may be your ONLY chance to do so!

Condition: good to very good. The poster has creases, smudges and pinholes around the edges (partially repaired with tape from the back in three places at left and in the lower vertical foldline edge). There is 3" of separation at the left edge of the center horizontal fold and there are some creases and an area of small separation at the edge of the lower vertical foldline. There is surface paper loss to the lower left of the title and some at lower left, and there are some tape stains to the left of the title. There are some small areas of separation along portions of the vertical foldline. It is otherwise in generally nice condition, and after linenbacking with some restoration to the above-mentioned defects the incredibly rare poster would look display well!
