An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The California Trail, the 1933 Lambert Hillyer cowboy western romantic melodrama ("Loved... Hated... Feared -- and a price on his head!"; "Playing a desperate game against death!"; set in Spanish California, the story is borrowed heavily from the Zorro novel, where Buck Jones is an outlaw called "The Yankee Bandit", but actually, he helps the poor people of a town against the corrupt mayor who is stealing all their food) starring Buck Jones, Helen Mack, Luis Alberni, George Humbert, and Charles Stevens NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had a dime-sized area of paper loss near the top crossfold just below Jones' eye. There was a backwards L-shaped tear around 8" long in the middle of the left border extending into Jones' collar. There was an 8" irregular tear running by the left of the "J" of "JONES" and extending into the bottom left of the "J". There were some creases, smudges, tears, and areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The person who did the restoration put new blank white paper over all the borders to even out the appearance (but the small writing at the bottom of the poster was not covered over). This is a common technique used by several top restorers. It is done so well that the majority of collectors are not even aware it has been done, and many do not feel it to be a significant detraction (since it is only blank white area). The poster was really nicely backed. You can't see signs of the above restoration, and yet it does not have a "restored" look to it. I would think it is likely that the restoration was done by Igor Edelman during his prime! Note that at some point after the poster was backed, it acquired some tiny bits of surface paper loss in the top right corner in the background area, and a tiny bit in the middle of the "E" of "FEARED" in the top left tagline area (any restorer could easily touch up those areas without re-backing the poster).
