An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 16 3/4" x 23 1/2" [43 x 60 cm]) (Learn More) Zoo Berlin (also known as the Berlin Zoological Garden) is the oldest and best known zoo in Germany. It opened in 1844, currently covers 86.5 acres and is located in Berlin's Tiergarten. With about 1,380 different species and over 20,200 animals the zoo presents one of the most comprehensive collection of species in the world. The zoo and its aquarium had more than 3.5 million visitors in 2017, and is considered to be the most visited zoo in Europe (and one of the most popular worldwide). Globally known animals like Knut, the polar bear, and Bao Bao, the giant panda have contributed to the zoo's public image. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that our consignor tells us this is from the 1930s (some sources say this poster is from 1930, and others say 1938, so we are putting "1930s", unless we find any exact date for it). Also, note that a German poster expert tells us that "Hohlwein was the master German graphic designer of the first half of the twentieth century. If you go to any major reference book on the art of posters in general (not just movie posters), there is a huge amount of information written up on him; For example, check out Alain Weill's 'The Poster A Worldwide Survey and History' (Boston, 1985 edition), and there are numerous references to him. That book says that Hohlwein is the most prolific and brilliant German poster artist of the 20th century. The reason several examples of this poster exist is because a small roll of these were found in the zoo's basement after the entire zoo was destroyed, except for a baby hippo (which a zookeeper took home with him!) and these posters are some of the only pre-World War II German zoo posters that have survived to the present day." Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has a very light diagonal crease at lower right that is almost not noticeable at all from the front. It has a few tiny tears in the upper blank border (one has been backed by a piece of clear tape). It is otherwise in very nice condition and it displays quite well (but please bear in mind that there is one tape repair on back of one edge of the poster). Learn More about condition grades
