Date Sold 11/23/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Shanghai, the 1935 James Tinling China Asian detective mystery opium drug smuggling crime thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Irene Hervey, Jon Hall (billed as "Charles Locher"), Russell Hicks, and Keye Luke. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this window card! Not only that, but U.S. posters from this movie are incredibly rare, and the last one we auctioned was a one-sheet 20 years ago, when it sold for $11,211! Condition: good. The poster has some tiny nail holes scattered in the upper half of the card and just a few in the bottom half, and none in Chan's face. There are 8 tiny black dot stains in Chan's forehead above one eye and scuffs in the middle right of the image, including over the woman's figure. Obviously, this incredibly rare card can be restored, but bear that in mind before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
