An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Gentlemen are Born, the 1934 Alfred E. Green Great Depression romantic melodrama (about four young men who graduate from college in 1934, ready to conquer the world, but because of The Great Depression, all of their lives take terrible turns for the worst, and the movie ends on a surprisingly downbeat note) starring Franchot Tone, Jean Muir, Margaret Lindsay, Ann Dvorak, Ross Alexander, and Dick Foran (billed as "Nick Foran"). Note that this movie is completely forgotten today except by major film buffs. I think the powers-that-be at Warner Bros. completely misjudged the audience for movies, thinking they would want to see an ultra depressing realistic movie about people in their early 20s facing the realities of The Great Depression, when they actually wanted to see cheerful musicals and comedies that would let them forget their everyday lives for a few hours. Perhaps they thought this movie would be able to break that trend in the way that "I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang" and "Wild Boys of the Railroad" had done for them, but this movie did not have the stars, script, or directors that those two movies did. Still, I have to give credit to Warner Bros. for producing this movie, and not copping out with an artificial happy ending where the lead characters' lives turn around!
