An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) an undated (probably mid-1940s, perhaps 1944) re-release of "The Duke is Tops" (re-titled "The Bronze Venus" for this re-release, to capitalize on Lena Horne's success in "Cabin in the Sky" and "Stormy Weather"), the 1938 Leo Popkin Toddy Pictures black African American musical ("The Swing Siren of 'Cabin in the Sky' and 'Stormy Weather'") starring Lena Horne ("Star sensation of 'Cabin in the Sky' and 'Stormy Weather'"), Ralph Cooper, Laurence Criner, Basin Street Boy, "The Cats and the Fiddle", and Monte Hawley. Note that all movie paper from this movie says "The Bronze Venus" ("The Duke is Tops"). Everyone agrees that this was a 1938 movie which had Lena Horne's first performance (it was shot in just 10 days, and she apparently was not even paid!), and that it was re-released in the 1940s by Toddy Pictures to capitalize on her success, and it seems quite likely it would have been re-edited at that time to emphasize her appearance in the movie (it is also possible that it was not re-edited, but that only the advertising was deceptively changed to feature her!). Until early 2017, we had never seen any movie paper from "The Duke is Tops"! However, a collector sent us images of a lobby card and the possible one-sheet for that film, so we at least know they existed (and are extremely rare). In addition, the IMDb now has added that the Toddy re-release is from 1941, but we highly doubt that! If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny bits of paper loss and separation on parts of the folds. It had some pinholes and tape stains around the edges. Part of the top blank border had been trimmed off unevenly. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
