A Set of 12 2021 "Faux" Lobby Cards (measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]; see below) (Learn More) The Penalty, the 1920 Wallace Worsley silent romantic love triangle doctor amputation crime revenge thriller (this is among the most bizarre of Lon Chaney's movies, and if you have seen several of them, then you know that is saying a lot!; Tod Browning did not write or direct this movie, surely because he was working at Universal at this time, and this was an MGM movie, but it is very similar to the Browning/Chaney movies; Chaney became sick as a boy, and a doctor amputated his legs needlessly, thinking it was necessary to save the boy's life; when he grows up, he becomes a legless criminal kingpin, and he wants revenge on the doctor, and when the doctor's daughter, who is a sculptress, advertises for someone to pose for her bust of Satan, he applies, and he kidnaps her and tries to force the doctor to operate on her fiance, removing his legs, and grafting them onto Chaney's legless stumps!; there are more twists and turns to the plot, but you should see it for yourself!) starring Charles Clary, Doris Pawn, Jim Mason, Lon Chaney Sr., and Ethel Grey Terry. Note that in filming this movie, Chaney had his calves strapped to his thighs, and that allowed him to appear legless (with two wooden buckets strapped over his "stumps"), but this was very painful and he could only endure it for short amounts of time, and it caused permanent damage to his leg muscles (Jose Ferrer would do the same thing many years later when playing Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge). Most people agree it is one of Chaney's very finest performances! Finally, note that Lon Chaney Sr. made this movie for Sam Goldwyn, after having worked for Universal. Apparently, Goldwyn was afraid of how the public would react to images of a legless Chaney, because the advertising for the movie greatly de-emphasizes that aspect of the movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of 52 "faux" lobby card sets we were consigned, which we are auctioning in 52 separate auctions! WHAT ARE THESE? Starting in 2021 a long time collector who (like so many of us) chose to stay home that year a lot due to Covid, and he made many faux lobby sets like this to help pass the time! He was inspired by the "Fantasy #9" lobby cards created several decades ago, each of which is from a classic horror/sci-fi movie, showing a great scene that wasn't in the original set! He created those sets using top images from each film! He did not make them through a computer program, but instead pasted together actual prints to create mock-ups. On most of these he made 8 card sets, but on some of them he created sets with odd quantities (as low as 4, and as high as 26 cards!). He then printed just THREE of each set, and he promised not to reprint them (and he has not). He numbered the first card in each set, and what we offered was the "1 of 3" of each set, which meant there are only two other sets of each, and there will never be more of those. SINCE 2021, OUR CONSIGNOR HAS MADE MORE SETS THREE TIMES, AND IN EACH CASE WE AUCTIONED THE "1/3" OF EACH SET. BUT NOW, OUR CONSIGNOR HAS SENT US 52 OF THE PAST SETS, BUT THESE ARE "2/3" (and we are auctioning them in 52 separate auctions). So in every case, we previously auctioned the 1/3 of each of these sets, and now we are auctioning the 2/3, so since our consignor told us that he is keeping the 3/3 of each set, then that means this is everyone's last chance to purchase one of these sets (unless he later decides to auction the set he kept for himself). So the winner of this auction has just one of three of these numbered sets that were created! REMEMBER THAT OUR CONSIGNOR PROMISES TO NEVER REPRINT THESE! So once again this is a great chance to get any of these really cool faux lobby sets! Condition: fine. These faux lobby cards are in excellent condition! Learn More about condition grades
