A 1941 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Scarface, the classic 1932 Howard Hawks gangster organized crime thriller ("The greatest drama of modern times!"; produced by Howard Hughes; "Adapted by Ben Hecht from the novel by Armitiage Trail"; loosely based on the rise and fall of Al Capone, who had a scar on his face and was sometimes called "Scarface", but never to his face) starring Paul Muni (in the title role; as Tony Camonte), Ann Dvorak (as Tony's sister), Karen Morley, Osgood Perkins, C. Henry Gordon, George Raft (as Guino Rinaldo, Tony's best friend), Vince Barnett, and Boris Karloff (the movie was made before Frankenstein, but released after Frankenstein, and United Artists saw Karloff's great success in that movie, and they were able to make most, but not all, of the first release posters bill him as "Boris 'Frankenstein' Karloff"). Finally, note that there was a Brian De Palma remake of this movie in 1983, with Al Pacino in the lead role (and the lead characters are no longer Italians, but are Cuban). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that there has long been controversy in the hobby as to whether the Astor re-releases of this classic movie are from the late 1930s or early 1940s. We auctioned a pressbook for the Astor re-release, and it reproduces newspaper stories from 1941, so we know for certain that it is a 1941 re-release! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had an extra horizontal fold just above the regular bottom fold and diagonal creases and extra folds along the middle foldline. There was a partial extra vertical foldline 1/2" to the left of the regular one and there was small paper loss at the crossfolds, and creases, tears, and areas of paper loss scattered down the extra vertical foldline, with some on the horizontal folds. There was a tear and paper loss in the top right (in Muni's shoulder and in the background above it) and some pinholes and tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
