2 Original Vintage Theatrical Lobby Cards (Measures 11" x 14") (Learn More)

Sleepers West, the 1941 Eugene Forde railroad train crime thriller ("Based on the novel 'Sleepers East' by Frederick Nebel"; about a private detective who must escort a beautiful witness to a trial where she will testify in San Francisco on a several days long train ride, and there are people on the train who don't want her to survive the trip) starring Lloyd Nolan (as Michael Shayne), Lynn Bari, Mary Beth Hughes, Edward Brophy, and Ben Carter (billed as "Ben 'Shadrack' Carter"). Note that "Michael Shayne: Private Detective" was the first in a series of twelve detective movies based on the character created by Brett Halliday. Lloyd Nolan played the character in the first seven movies between 1940 and 1942. There was then a 4 year gap and the series resumed in 1946, with Hugh Beaumont (best remembered as the father in TV's "Leave it to Beaver") taking over the role and he starred in five movies in 1946 and 1947. Also note that there had been a previous 1934 Fox movie called "Sleepers East", but that movie and this movie only had superficial similarities (and that earlier movie had the same title as the source novel, and that is likely why they changed the title of this movie to "Sleepers West", so it would not seem to be a remake of the eight years earlier movie, "Sleepers East"). Finally, note that RKO Pictures pretty much borrowed the entire plot of this movie for their 1952 movie, "The Narrow Margin".
