An Original Vintage Theatrical Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) At the Circus, the 1939 Edward Buzzell musical circus screwball comedy ("Keep the world laughing!") starring The Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, and Harpo Marx), Kenny Baker, Florence Rice, Eve Arden, Margaret Dumont, Nat Pendleton, Fritz Feld, and Charles Gemora (as Gibraltar the gorilla). Note that this was the movie where the Marx Brothers sing the song "Lydia the Tattooed Lady"! Also note that MGM initially was going to call this movie "A Day at the Circus" (to capitalize on the success of "A Day at the Races"), but that title was dropped (although it is on a few stills). There was a working title of "Marx Bros At the Circus" that is also on some stills, but not the 1939 posters or lobby cards. To make things confusing, when MGM re-released the movie in 1962, the advertising made it look like the title of the movie was "Marx Bros At the Circus". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY first release posters from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a one-sheet (24 years ago), and NO other posters of any kind until we received this half-sheet! Condition: very good. The poster was folded once in each direction. It had creases, tiny tears, and tiny bits of paper loss in the horizontal fold, with a much lesser amount of wear on the vertical fold. It had some creases around the edges, with a vertical crease in the bottom of the right blank border. Someone wrote some numbers in the top right corner. Someone performed restoration to the tears in the left and right of the horizontal fold, but they just mended the tears and did not perform paint restoration to the front. I think the poster displays well from any reasonable viewing distance as it is, but if the new owner chooses, it would not be difficult at all for a restorer to touch up the tiny bits of surface paper loss on the horizontal fold, either with or without backing the poster. Whatever the new owner decides to do, they will have a great rare and colorful poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
