An Original Vintage German Campaign Book (measures 8 1/4" x 11 3/4" [21 x 30 cm]; 88 pages) (Learn More) Deutsche Filmkunst 1942 - 1943, the 1942 German campaign book featuring art and information about upcoming film productions such as Der dunkle Tag, Karneval der Liebe, Der Flachsacker, Munchhausen, and many, many more! Of special interest in this book is the preface by notorious Nazi, Joseph Goebbels, and a second preface by Dr. Fritz Hippler, and Hippler's preface closes with "Heil Hitler". We have included images of the cover of the book and several of the interior pages (and we did not make a big effort to find the best ones, and we really wish we could have pictured them all!). This book advertises films made by many of the German studios that were still in existence at this time, plus Austrian films as well. Naturally, since they were released in Nazi Germany, most of those movies are not at all known today, and many of them may have been on the "forbidden" list. Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived (and surely German editions of campaign books are even more rare, both because of German World War II paper drives, and because the ones made during World War II have Nazi content!). I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that some of the movies listed in this book may never have been made at all, and some had their titles changed, and some had their cast or director changed! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters (often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists), because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters, rather than the studios (although of course, what was good for the theaters was ultimately good for the studios as well). Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars! Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned two examples of this German campaign book, and the last one sold for $282. Interestingly, one of those was missing the front cover and had cut pages, and the other one was missing the first page (not surprisingly, because it had a first interior page with a large picture of Joseph Goebbels in the top right, and someone removed it from the book (no doubt reflecting his change in status from German leader to hated Nazi). However, THIS campaign book is complete and HAS that first page, so it is far better than either of the past two that we have auctioned! Also note that German campaign books from the heart of World War II are incredibly rare (both because they likely didn't make too many, but also because surely most were destroyed right after the war. Condition: very good. There are some small tears and tiny paper loss on the spine, but otherwise, the campaign book is in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
