An Original Vintage French Campaign Book (measures 8 1/2" x 10 3/4" [22 x 27 cm]; 108 pages) (Learn More) Le Royal was a cinema in the French city of Toulouse which opened on July 10th, 1919 and closed in October of 1977. The theater was decorated in the Egyptian style and featured an orchestra of 19 musicians, with a large main hall with 1200 seats. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was apparently one of the most premier theaters in all of France, and in 1928, it even created its own full-color "campaign book", which it gave to its top patrons, so they could know many of the best movies that would be playing there the coming year! In the mid-1950s, it was "modernized" to once again offer top-of-the-range comfort to theater-goers. Unfortunately, attendance declined and in the 1970s the theater was reduced to showing sexploitation films before finally closing. Important Added Info: Note that this is the "campaign book" referred to above, which is tiltled "Livre d'Or Saison 1928-1929". "Livre d'Or" is a French idiom that meant "Visitors' Book", and this wonderful book was published by the theater in 1928, and given to their best patrons, so they could know movies they were showing over the coming year. We have never seen another campaign book produced by a theater rather than a studio! And this one has a square binding and 108 pages, and while the art and text may have been taken from either French pressbooks or studio publications, it is also possible that some or much of it was original for this theater. Included in the book are ads for movies from many of the top stars of the day, including Buster Keaton's "The General", The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Man Who Laughs, Douglas Fairbanks' "The Gaucho", E.A. Dupont's "Moulin Rouge", and many more! We have never before auctioned this book or any other book from this theater! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note: We have 12 images of this campaign book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 12 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 2. Condition: very good. There are some tears and tiny paper loss on the spine.
