An Original Vintage Linenbacked French Stage Play Poster (measures 39" x 54" [99 x 137 cm]) (Learn More)

The Folies Bergere is a cabaret music hall established in 1869 in Paris, France. Revues featured extravagant costumes, sets and effects, and often nude women. In 1926, Josephine Baker caused a sensation at the Folies Bergere by dancing in a costume consisting of a skirt made of a string of artificial bananas and little else. It has been the stage for many other famous acts including: Maurice Chevalier, Fernandel, W.C. Fields, Ella Fitzgerald, and many, many more!
Artist: Alain Aslan
Important Added Info: Note that we have auctioned multiple examples of several posters from this cabaret, but we have only previously auctioned two examples of this poster!

Note that Aslan (Alain Gourdon) was a French painter, sculptor and pin-up artist who was well-known in France for his pin up artwork. He contributed a monthly pin-up to Lui (a French adult magazine) from 1964 to the early eighties. He is also the sculptor of the Dalida's (a famous French vocalist and actress) funerary statue on her tomb from 1987, and her bronze bust that was erected on Place Dalida in 1997. He also sculpted the Fifth Republic Marianne as Brigitte Bardot in 1970, followed by the Mireille Mathieu Marianne.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded and was in nice condition prior to linenbacking. Unfortunately, it was not mounted correctly, and there are some small areas in the upper center in the girl's arm and below it, where the poster is "lifting" from the linen. There is also a similar area in the upper left black background area. A restorer can likely correct this without re-backing the poster, but bear this in mind before bidding.
