NIGHT OF THE DEMON ('57) NIGHT OF THE DEMON ('57) Belgian OR search current auctions Auction History Result #8051 NIGHT OF THE DEMON Belgian '57 Tourneur Date Sold 2/18/2003Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14" x 21 1/4") (Learn More) Night of the Demon (this was also re-cut and released in the U.S. as "Curse of the Demon"), the 1957 Jacques Tourneur English horror thriller ("Horror!"; "Most terrifying story the screen has ever told!"; "Hell on Earth! Skeptical? Don't make up your mind till you see this masterpiece of the macabre!"; "Demons! Monsters from Hell!"; "You will actually see them on the screen!"; "Terrifying!!"; "Scenes of terror never before imagined! Satan's most horrifying creatures loose in a modern city!"; "Based on the story 'Casting the Runes' by Montague R. James") starring Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins, Niall MacGinnis, Maurice Denham, Athene Seyler, and Liam Redmond. Note that although the demon's image is one of the '50s most iconic monsters, it was not in the original English version of the film (Night of the Demon), and only appears in the American re-cut version (Curse of the Demon). Director Jacques Tourneur wanted to create a brooding, moody film of the type he had done for Val Lewton in the 1940s. But the producer of the American version was Hal E. Chester, better known as Hally Chester, one of the East side Kids with Billy Halop, Huntz Hall, et al in the early 1940s. Against Tourneur's wishes, he re-cut the film for its American release with its new title, and with the cheesy looking monster appearing not only at the end but at the beginning too, absolutely killing off suspense and anticipation. Ironically, it's that image that's most closely associated with the picture in the minds of most horror/sci-fi fans. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
