Date Sold 9/28/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (surely from 1919, 1920, or 1921; see below) Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Easy Street, the 1917 Charlie Chaplin silent romantic slapstick comedy short (the Tramp goes into a church and steals the collection box, but when he sees a beautiful girl, he puts it back, and becomes a policeman, and is assigned to a really tough street known euphemistically as "Easy Street", and he cleans it up and wins the girl) starring Charles Chaplin, Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell (as The Bully), Albert Austin, and Lloyd Bacon. Note that the phrase "on Easy Street" (referring to "having it made") is an expression everyone "knows", but its origins are somewhat murky. Some sources say it came about in the early 1700s (with no citation), but while all sources agree it became popular around 1900 to 1905, most disagree as to where it originated from at time! Charlie Chaplin grew up near a street named "East Street", and it was in a rough neighborhood, and that may have served as the inspirations for this film's "Easy Street" (and of course Chaplin used the term ironically, for the street was anything but "easy" to live on). In today's world, with so many billionaires, there are lots and lots of people who have truly arrived on "Easy Street"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that in July of 2020, we auctioned the first release one-sheet for this movie, and it sold for $63,499! Note that in 1919, the Clark-Cornelius Corporation bought the rights to the early Charlie Chaplin shorts, and began re-releasing them. In 1922, they released them for the last time, and in that year, they changed their name to C.C. Pictures. Some of the re-release paper from this company has the original release date on it, but they definitely date from between 1919 and 1921 if they say "Clark-Cornelius Corporation" or from 1922 if they say "C.C. Pictures". In the case of this card it has "Select Pictures" above the title and a tiny box with Clark-Cornelius below the title, so we know the card dates from between 1919 and 1921. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: very good. The card had a pinhole in the lower left background area and a few pinholes, smudges, and stains around the edges, with tiny paper loss in the bottom left blank corner. Someone performed slight restoration to the above areas without backing the card and it displays well. Learn More about condition grades
