An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Return of Chandu (The Magician), the 1934 Ray Taylor black magic fantasy horror serial sequel ("He's back! The Master of Magic and Thrills"; "with a Distinguished Cast") starring Bela Lugosi (in the title role as Chandu), Maria Alba, Murdock MacQuarrie, Phyllis Ludwig, and Clara Kimball Young. Note that Chandu the Magician was a radio show that started airing in Los Angeles in 1931, and went nationwide the following year. That was also when a movie adaptation, called Chandu the Magician, was made. Two years later, this sequel, The Return of Chandu, was made, and this time, Bela Lugosi played the lead role, after having a supporting role in the prequel. The show went off the air in 1936. It was revived in 1948 as a 15 minute show and ran for two years. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was the one created to use when showing the entire serial. However, the theater that used this exact poster decided to use it for a showing of just chapter 1, and they had a local person paint over the entire bottom distributor credits area with the words "EPISODE 1 The CHOSEN VICTIM". It was pretty well done, and the poster displays pretty well, but it is unlikely that paint could be removed, only painted over yet again, so it would make more sense to keep this poster just as it is. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this unusual "defect". What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. As noted above, the poster has overpainting at the bottom, and a theater decided to use it for a specific chapter. Otherwise, it had tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking (depending on how you value the overpainting). Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this unusual "defect". Learn More about condition grades
