An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Devil Plays, the 1931 Richard Thorpe detective murder mystery melodrama (about a high society murder, and there are many wealthy suspects, and when a woman announces she has important evidence, she too is murdered; finally, a novelist/detective brings all the suspects together in the police inspector's office and dramatically names the murderer) starring Jameson Thomas, Florence Britton, Thomas E. Jackson, Dorothy Christy, and Richard Tucker. Note that the setup of this movie bears a striking similarity to the Nero Wolfe books written by Rex Stout, beginning in 1933, where a detective gathers all the suspects together and announces the murderer. This device was likely used before this, but it seems quite probable that Stout saw this movie and that it influenced his novels!. Also note that top billed female Florence Britton's career did not go well after this movie, because she was soon playing bit parts, and her career was over a couple years later, but she had brains as well as beauty, and she became a story editor and had a long and successful career!
