An Original Vintage Oscar Statuette Movie Prop (measures 5 1/2" x 14" [14 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) A Star Is Born, the classic 1954 George Cukor theater stage acting musical romantic melodrama ("We believe there hasn't been before, even once, such a performance by a motion picture star, such perfection in motion picture entertainment!"; "There has been no performance like Judy Garland's. There has been no picture like 'A Star is Born'."; about an aging star who marries an up-and-coming star; partially based on the true story of Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler, which had been previously somewhat covered in "The Jolson Story" in 1946) starring Judy Garland (nominated for of the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; her loss to Grace Kelly was famously quipped by Groucho Marx as "the biggest robbery since Brink's"!), James Mason (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Jack Carson, Charles Bickford, Tommy Noonan, Lucy Marlow, Amanda Blake, Irving Bacon, James Brown, Lotus Robb, Richard Webb, and Sam Colt. Note that this movie was loosely remade in 1976, with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristoffersen in the lead roles, and they were updated to being rock 'n' roll (rock and roll) performers. It was remade again in 2018, with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that when Warner Bros. made this classic movie, they needed the key scene where Judy Garland's character would win an Academy Award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would not allow a real Oscar to be used in the movie! But they did say they would be okay with a duplicate being used. So Warner Bros. took a real Oscar and made a mold, and then made one duplicate, and then destroyed the mold. What is being auctioned here is that duplicate Oscar that was made by Warner Bros. and actually used in the movie! It was purchased by our consignor in 1998 from collector Michael Shaw. Shaw was a legendary very early collector of movie posters and props (some of the first Portal Publications repros came from his collection), and he was also an actor. He was good friends with Amanda Blake, who had been in A Star is Born in a tiny part. She saw the Oscar sitting on a table after they filmed the scene, and she asked director George Cukor if she could take it, and he said she could. In 1969, she was moving to a small place, and she gave the Oscar to Michael Shaw. He held it from then until 1998, when he sold it to our consignor in a private sale. The winner of this auction gets the Oscar, a letter from Mr. Shaw to our consignor detailing all of the above, and a page giving the description that was put on the Oscar when it was displayed at the 1992 Judy Garland Festival in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Also included are two 8x10 television stills from the movie showing Miss Garland holding the Oscar, as well as two photos from the 1992 festival, and one close up photo of the Oscar.
UPDATED 12/24/2020: We have more information about the statuette that we wanted to share. It weighs approximately 3.5 lbs and is made of a resin material, consistent with film props from the 1940s and 1950s. Condition: very good. We have taken a number of photos of the Oscar from different angles so you can get a good sense of the condition. Learn More about condition grades
