An Original Vintage English Movie Trade Ad (measures 11" x 16 3/4" [28 x 43 cm]; 2 pages) (Learn More)

Bitter Springs, the 1950 Ralph Smart Australian/English Ealing Studios Outback sheep herding Aborigine action adventure melodrama ("An adventure story of the Australian bush."; "from an original story by Ralph Smart"; about a group of English sheep herders who intend to take them into the Outback and set up a ranch at a waterhole, but they discover that there are Aborigines there who need the water badly, and the two sides clash, and after a killing of an Aborigine, one of the Englishman's sons is kidnapped, and things escalate from there) starring Tommy Trinder, Chips Rafferty, Michael Pate, Nonnie Piper, Gordon Jackson, Charles Tingwel, and Jean Blue. Note that the movie is filled with the culture clash between the white men and the Aborigines living in Australia at that time, and it treats the subject in a pretty even handed manner, giving time for both sides' views, but it is weakened by an artificial tacked-on happy ending that has the military come in and break things up, and then the Aborigines agree to work for the white men and share the land, which makes little sense compared to what came before. But it is still an important historical document of that time, filmed in Australia.

Important Added Info: Note that this is a great two-page trade ad taken out of a Kinematograph Weekly English trade magazine (we have a number of them in this set of auctions, and also some one-page English trade ads and a few English brochures). Studios would run these elaborate 2-page ads in issues of this magazine, and they often had images not found on any of the regular movie posters (either English or U.S.). This 2-page trade ad was removed from a 1950 issue of this magazine, and it will look incredible displayed on the new owner's wall. The back of those two pages have text or ads for other movies from that time, and we have not pictured those back pages because the primary interest to bidders is the great two-page color ad, which measures 11" x 17". Also note that this is a country of origin item for this English movie.

Condition: very good. The ad was removed from a magazine (see above). It was the centerfold of the magazine so the two pages are on a single sheet, and there are staple holes at the spine (see our image).
