An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13 1/2" x 29 3/4" [34 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) The Left Hand of God, the 1955 Edward Dmytryk religious melodrama ("Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow..."; "He profaned the cloth he wore! She fought against a forbidden relationship! It happened in the hidden valleys of China."; "The provocative best-seller that rocked the world with its daring is on the screen!"; "The strangest covenant between God and man ever made!"; "Based on the Novel 'The Left Hand of God' by William E. Barrett"; "Screen play by Alfred Hayes"; about an American priest in a small Asian village; he seeks to save them from destruction from a warlord, and a beautiful local woman is romantically attracted to the priest, but she thinks that is forbidden; ultimately, [spoiler alert!] Bogart is revealed to be a pilot who assumed the identity of a dead priest) starring Humphrey Bogart, Gene Tierney, Lee J. Cobb (billed as "also starring Lee J. Cobb"), Agnes Moorehead (billed as "with Agnes Moorehead"), E.G. Marshall, Jean Porter, Philip Ahn, Victor Sen Yung, and Benson Fong. Note that Lee J. Cobb played an Asian role with "yellowface" makeup, something that Hollywood films were still doing in the mid 1950s, but fortunately will never do again. And the movie's producers cast some well known real Asians in supporting roles, perhaps to give the movie authenticity! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss in the right blank border, and a few smudges and dot stains around the edges. It had slight wear on the foldlines and dot stains at the bottom of the "D" of "GOD" in the title. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
