An Undated (probably 1950s but perhaps earlier; see below) Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked French Large Movie Poster (31x47; measures 31 1/4" x 46 3/4" [79 x 119 cm]) (Learn More) Frankenstein, the classic 1931 James Whale Universal monster horror thriller ("The monster that terrorized the world!"; "The Man Who Made a Monster"; "Warning! The monster is loose!"; "Based upon the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Story"; "Adapted by John L. Balderston from the play by Peggy Webling"; the first of the Universal "Frankenstein" movies, and regarded as one of the finer movies of any genre, in large part due to the marvelous acting of Boris Karloff, and the marvelous direction of James Whale!) starring Colin Clive (as Dr. Herbert V. Frankenstein), Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein monster), Edward Van Sloan, Fredric Kerr, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye (extremely memorable as Fritz), and John Boles NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Boris Grinsson Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare poster which we have never auctioned before. We have seen reputable resources call it a 1945 and 1947 re-release poster. However, Universal French posters from the 1940s generally have "Universal Film S.A." on them, while this poster has "Universal Film Inc", which seems to have started around 1952. To further complicate matters, "Universal Film S.A." was still used on posters in the 1950s. Until we learn more, we feel it is best to consider this a 1950s re-release poster (possibly for a 16mm release). Update: A long-time collector tells us that he first saw this poster in 1958! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had creases, scuffs, and a few tiny bits of paper loss along the folds, with some scuffs scattered in the solid colored areas. It had some tears and tiny paper loss in the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
