An Original 1933 (from the first release of this movie in Germany) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked German Movie Poster (measures 13 3/4" x 18 3/4" [35 x 48 cm]) (Learn More) Bird of Paradise, the 1932 King Vidor South Seas tropical island jungle romantic adventure thriller ("It happened in Hawaii!"; from the play by Richard Walton Tully; about a handsome South Seas sailor who meets the daughter of an island chief, and he falls in love with her, and he plans to stay on the island with her, but the chief tells him that his daughter is promised to a nearby prince, and that she is "taboo" to the sailor; of course, the sailor and the girl defy her father, and go to live on a deserted island, but she becomes afraid that her betrayal will cause the volcano to erupt, and when it does, the island men come to take the daughter back and sacrifice her; the girl and the sailor are both captured and almost die, but his ship returns and rescues them, but the girl fears that her people will die if she leaves, so she returns and throws herself into the volcano!) starring Dolores Del Rio, Joel McCrea, John Halliday, Lon Chaney Jr. (billed as "Creighton Chaney"), Richard 'Skeets' Gallagher, Bert Roach, and Agostino Borgato. Note that this movie has massive similarity to Albert S. Rogell's "Aloha", made the previous year. We don't know if one movie inspired the other, or if there was any controversy at this time over the similarity of the two movies. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II German poster! Very few German posters survive from before World War II (even fewer than those from other European countries) due to massive paper shortages in Germany at that time that resulted in almost all old paper being recycled. The poster has an emblem in the upper right which includes the date of the poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had darkened slightly, but was otherwise in nice condition prior to linenbacking.
