An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 30 1/2" x 40" [77 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Spirit of 1917, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("Join the United States Marines and be first in defense on land or sea") encouraging men to join the Marines, and featuring art of a U.S. Marine color guard leading the advance. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this war poster, and that was 6 years ago (and that example was only in "fair" condition)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had small paper loss in the bottom right corner and some smudges, tears, and tiny paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking.
