An Unfolded German Travel Poster (measures 33" x 47 1/4" [84 x 120 cm]) (Learn More) The Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG for short and referred to in English as Hamburg America Line or Hamburg-American Line) was a transatlantic shipping enterprise established in Hamburg, Germany in 1847. It soon developed into the largest German (and at times the world's largest) shipping company, serving the market created by the German immigration to the United States and later immigration from Eastern Europe. In 1970, after 123 years of independent existence, HAPAG merged with the Bremen-based North German Lloyd to form Hapag-Lloyd AG. Artist: Albert Fuss Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned it before! It is one of four wonderful German travel posters from this company from the 1930s which we are currently auctioning, each of which is surely very rare (and they are likely among the most desirable travel posters, and the most difficult to obtain). The four posters are in four separate auctions. Note that this poster is promoting travel to the West Indies and Central America and features art of a tropical setting with a ship in the background. Note also that the poster mentions the ships Caribia (launched in 1931 and ceded to Britain and then the USSR after WWII) and Cordillera (launched in 1933, damaged in WWII and later repaired and ceded to the USSR). Note that this poster must be sent in a tube that is over 32" long (which is why it is in this set of auctions). You can tell how long the tube will need to be by adding 2 inches to the shorter dimension of the length or width (so 40x60s need to be sent in a 42 inch long tube, etc). Most of these posters (with the notable exception of paper banners) CAN be combined in the same tube together, with a few exceptions. Bear in mind that a very long tube (42 inches or longer) will cost a lot more to send than a 30" tube, so bear that in mind before bidding on this poster. Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has tape on the back of the right border and that tape has bled through to the front. It has a few small tears in portions of just a few edges (some are repaired with restoration tape from the back) but overall these few edge defects the poster's art is in really nice condition!
