An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Six-Sheet Movie Poster (6sh; measures 84" x 84" [213 x 213 cm]) (Learn More) Joseph Mankiewicz's Cleopatra, the 1963 (while it was in limited released in the U.S. in 1963, it did not go into general release in the U.S. until 1964, so the posters all have 1964 dating on them) Joseph L. Mankiewicz English/Swiss/U.S. Egypt historical romantic pseudo-biography epic ("The No1 of all time"; "See Cleopatra triumphant entry into Rome!"; "See the thrilling battle of Actium!"; "See the brutal assassination of Caesar!"; "See the love affairs that destroyed an empire!"; "See the victorious Roman army occupy Cleopatra's Empire"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the novel by Carlo Mario Franzero) starring Elizabeth Taylor (in the title role as Cleopatra), Richard Burton ("as Mark Antony"), Rex Harrison (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; "as Julius Caesar"), Pamela Brown, George Cole, Hume Cronyn, Cesare Danova, Kenneth Haigh (as Brutus), Roddy McDowall (as Octavian), Loris Loddi, and Francesca Annis. Note that this epic production created epic problems for 20th Century-Fox! Huge salaries and many production delays caused the budget for the movie to soar to then record heights, and it almost bankrupted the studio! Initially, Peter Finch was cast as Julius Caesar and Stephen Boyd as "Mark Antony", and this trade ad, which was released at the very start of production, has them billed under Elizabeth Taylor. But during filming in England, she became ill, and production had to be halted, since she was in virtually every scene of the movie. Director Rouben Mamoulian quit to work on another project, and so did Peter Finch and Stephen Boyd, who had to quit due to prior commitments for other movies, and they were of course replaced by Rex Harrison and Richard Burton. We HAVE auctioned many three-sheets and one-sheets, and we don't know why this six-sheet is many times more rare, but it clearly is! Note that the poster measures 84" x 84", not 81" x 81". This was something that Fox was experimenting with at this time, and several titles were made that size. The experiment was likely abandoned due to complaints by movie theaters that put the posters into six-sheet frames, and these slightly oversized posters didn't fit! Also note that this six-sheet was printed in 4 sections designed to overlap. Condition: fair to good. There are pairs of staple holes around the edges of the poster with some faint water staining scattered throughout the poster. There is also some light brown staining scattered in parts of the poster with some tears and tiny areas of paper loss in parts of the borders and folds. However, the poster is mostly "all there", as can be seen in our image, and any talented restorer can repair the above defects during the linenbacking process, and afterwards, the poster will display really well, but bear this poster's defects in mind before bidding. Obviously one would prefer a better condition example, but we don't know that a better one exists! Learn More about condition grades
