An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) East is West, the 1922 Sidney Franklin silent China interracial romantic comedy ("She'd wink Till hearts Went on the blink And staid professors Couldn't think. And everywhere They'd stop to stare, And say 'Some Chink!' When Ming Toy winked."; "Me speak dignified American language... get me Steve?"; "8 Reels"; based on the 1918 play by John B. Hymer and Samuel Shipman which starred Fay Bainter) starring Constance Talmadge (in "yellowface" makeup "as Ming Toy"), Edmund Burns, Warner Oland, E. Alyn Warren, and Frank Lanning. Note that this movie was remade in 1930 with Lupe Velez in the title role! Note that, as was common in early Hollywood, non-Asian actors were hired to play Asians, and they did this through the use of "yellowface" makeup (similar to "blackface" makeup that had been used for so long). Often, this was in movies that featured "interracial romances" between Asians and westerners, and those who participated in such romances were shunned and often they led to murders or suicides. And often, there were Asian racial stereotypes in these movies, as there were with black performers in the movies they appeared in. Thankfully, these sorts of movies and the practice of actors performing in "yellowface" has almost completely been abandoned! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). good to very good. The poster has a vertical crease 2" to the left of the top center of the poster that runs from the top border down to the top of Talmadge's hair. There are some horizontal creases near the bottom of that vertical crease. There are small areas of paper loss at the bottom two crossfolds. There were tears, creases, and pinholes around the edges of the poster extending into the edges of the image. The poster looks pretty nice as is, but certainly it could be re-backed and it would look wonderful, and it would not require much paint restoration in the image area.
