After being arrested in the 1950s, Sostre converted to Islam while incarcerated. After being released from Attica prison, he went on to open the first Afro-Asian bookstore in Buffalo, New York. He was arrested again in 1967 on charges later found to be fabricated as part of a COINTELPRO program. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 92.
