An Unfolded French Travel Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 39 1/2" [62 x 100 cm]) (Learn More)

The Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (typically known overseas as the French Line or Transat) was a French shipping company which was founded in 1855 by the brothers Emile and Issac Pereire under the name Compagnie Generale Maritime. The company was entrusted by the French government to transport mail to North America, and in 1861, the name of the company was changed to Compagnie Generale Transatlantique. After a period of trials and errors in the late 19th century, the company gained fame in the 1910s and 1930s with its prestigious ocean liners such as SS Paris, SS Ile de France, and especially SS Normandie. Contrary to what its name suggests, the company was not content with operating just in the North Atlantic route. It also offered service to Central America and even, for a time, the Pacific coast. From the beginning of the 20th century, it offered crossings between Marseille and Algiers, creating a tourist circuit in North Africa in the 1920s. In the 1930s, the company briefly became involved in aviation through Air France Translatlantique. Other than operating ocean liners, the company also had a significant fleet of freighters.
Artist: Paul Colin

Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has some faint small brown stains scattered throughout. They are mostly noticeable from the front in the white area near the center of the poster. There are a few creases and small scuffs scattered in the image as well. Certainly this wonderful poster can be displayed as it is, or one might choose to have it backed. Either way it will look incredible on the new owner's wall!
