Note that Richard Harding Davis was a very important journalist and author of the 1890s and early 20th century, and he became a celebrity in his own right, in part because he cut a dashing handsome figure (he is said to have been the model for illustrator Charles Dana Gibson's dashing Gibson man). He greatly helped Teddy Roosevelt's career through his glamorization of Roosevelt's exploits. In 1892, he wrote a collection of short stories called "Van Bibber and Others" and this short was part of a series of over 30 shorts featuring Earle Foxe as Reginald Van Bibber.
