An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Jumbo Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Dinner at Eight, the classic 1933 George Cukor New York City high society romantic comedy ("Greatest entertainment ever offered by stage or screen"; "From the Sam H. Harris stage play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber"; about a rich couple who throw a dinner for a group of very different New York society types, and young Jean Harlow steals the show as the trophy girlfriend of rich Wallace Beery) starring Marie Dressler, John Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Jean Harlow, Lee Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, Edmund Lowe, Billie Burke, Madge Evans, Jean Hersholt, Karen Morley, and Phillips Holmes. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", re-titled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release movie paper from this classic comedy has always been incredibly scarce. Over our many years of auctioning, we have auctioned three half-sheets and a title card, but no other posters, until we were consigned this jumbo window card. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had some pinholes and tears around the edges. It had many light smudges and stains scattered throughout the card. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to paperbacking. A restorer painted over the title, credits, and background areas, to "even them out", but they left alone Harlow's image and the head images at right. When the restorer had to touch up the bottom small credits, because it was affected by the small paper loss around the edges, the credit for "Sam H. Harris" had paper loss in the tiny "is", and the restorer changed his last name to "Harry"! Of course, virtually nobody will notice this, and any other restorer could correct this tiny defect. The card displays fairly well from a reasonable viewing distance, but when one looks at it close up, you clearly see the many defects in the unrestored areas. Obviously, one would prefer to find a better condition example of this card, but it is incredibly rare, and it might be many, many years before that better condition card surfaces.
