Date Sold 6/8/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded World War II Poster (measures 13" x 15" [33 x 38 cm]) (Learn More) Repair for Defense, the 1940s U.S. World War II (WWII) Home Front poster ("FHA Pay-Out-of-Income Plan") encouraging people to use the Federal Housing Administration's program. We know that the FHA began in 1934, at the height of the Great Depression, and that it was designed to help people buy homes and repair existing homes. We of course also know that it became part of HUD in 1965 and that the vast number of subprime FHA loans led to the massive subprime mortgage crisis in 2007! But we know nothing about the FHA's role in World War II, and we don't know the meaning of either tagline on this poster (either "pay-out-of-incoming" or "repair for defense"). A quick search of the Internet did not help! Note that this is a one of a kind poster that was hand-created (likely using using stencils) by a single artist. It is similar to other posters we are auctioning that were created by one of the many artists hired by the WPA, and while this one is not marked that way, we think it is quite likely also by a WPA artist. That artist might have created multiple posters with the exact same image, but it is also quite possible that this is the only example of this hand-created poster that exists! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is on a heavier weight paper stock, similar to that of window cards of this time period. It cannot be rolled and sent in a tube, so it will need to be sent in a large flat package.
UPDATED 06/07/2017: Note that we originally had hand-painted in the Auction Title, when hand-created would be more appropriate. This poster was likely created by hand using stencils or silk-screen, and not using normal mass printing techniques. Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
