Date Sold 11/19/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Broken Lullaby (released in other English-speaking countries as "The Man I Killed"), the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch World War I (WWI) melodrama (written by Samson Raphaelson; about a French musical student who is goes into the military and who ends up killing a German soldier who was a classmate of his, and he travels to Germany to meet the young man's family) starring Lionel Barrymore, Nancy Carroll, Phillips Holmes, Louise Carter, and Zasu Pitts. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", retitled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two lobby cards from this movie, and only one of those two cards had the alternate title like this one has! Note that the card has the international title of "The Man I Killed" printed on it. That may mean that it was used in another country that used this title, or it could be that the movie was released in the U.S. under both titles. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card has darkened, typical of Paramount lobby cards of this period. There are tack holes around the edges, with some smudges and scuffs scattered in the card (but they are mostly only noticeable when the card is tilted to the light). Please look at our super-sized images to get a good sense of the exact condition of this card. Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! Learn More about condition grades
