An Original Vintage Linenbacked Italian Poster (measures 27 1/4" x 37 1/2" [69 x 95 cm]) (Learn More) Caesar Film was an Italian film production and distribution company active in an initial phase during silent cinema from 1914 to 1919. In these years it became one of the main production houses, involving in its activity many of the most important directors and actors of the time. However, movies from the U.S. soon began to threaten Caesar Film and other Italian film companies. To combat this, several companies (including Caesar Film) merged to form UCI. Unfortunately, UCI went bankrupt in 1925 and this also forced most member companies to cease production. However, Caesar Film was relaunched at the beginning of the sound cinema for a second period of activity that lasted from 1931 to 1935. Artist: Giovanni Spellani Important Added Info: Note that there is some evidence to suggest that this poster is promoting a movie based on the 1905 stage play The Girl of the Golden West (which was adapted into an Italian opera and numerous movies, including a 1915 version by Cecil B. DeMille). However, we cannot be certain. If anyone knows what movie this poster is promoting, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfold and some tiny bits of paper loss on both folds, with creases in the center of the poster, and some creases scattered throughout the poster. It had a few tiny bits of paper loss near the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed and displayed pretty well, but at some later time, it acquired significant water staining across the back of the top few inches of the poster, which has stained the front of the poster in some of that area on the front, and has also caused the linen to become rippled in parts of the right two-thirds of the poster. Obviously, the poster can be removed from the linen and properly re-backed, but bear all of the above in mind before placing a bid on it. Learn More about condition grades
