Date Sold 12/10/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Linenbacked Special Poster (measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) U.S. Marines, the 1913 pre-World War I U.S. military recruitment poster ("First to hoist Old Glory on foreign soil. Join them for overseas duty") encouraging men to join the Marines, and featuring Sidney H. Riesenberg & Axel Tornrose art of a Marines raising the United States flag and performing various duties in foreign countries. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Artist: Sidney H. Riesenberg & Axel Tornrose Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster was printed on a fairly heavy paper stock and it had many creases, tears, and some areas of paper loss down the left and right borders, with some stains, creases, and tears scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed it onto linen with only slight restoration. The poster is "lifting" from the linen down the left and right edges. A restorer could perform additional restoration as it is, but it would make more sense to have it re-backed. Please bear in mind its significant condition defects and look at our super-sized image before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
