An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 40 1/2" [71 x 103 cm]) (Learn More) Joe Frazier vs Muhammad Ali Fight Pictures, the 1971 boxing match sports fight ("Direct from ringside"; "Popular Prices"; "Battle of the Champions"; "In Color"; "Will not be shown on home TV for at least 6 months!"; the fight took place on March 8th, 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, which was Ali's first fight after having been stripped of his crown, and which would decide who was the champion, which was why it was billed as "Battle of the Champions"!) featuring Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali ("Cassius Clay"). This match was billed as the Fight of the Century or simply The Fight, and resulted in Frazier winning in 15 rounds via unanimous decision. It was the first of a trilogy, followed by the rematch fights Super Fight II in 1974 and Thrilla in Manila in 1975 (both won by Ali). Oddly, the poster bills Muhammad Ali under that name in the large letters at center, but also has "Cassius Clay" in small letters under his image! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have seen two versions of this poster. One is white and the other is yellow. Most examples of the white poster, and the one example of the yellow poster that we have auctioned, have the additional tagline "Round by Round - Blow by Blow", and a Muhammad Ali expert tells us that this is because it was solely used to advertise the fight when it was shown in theaters via a live closed-circuit feed from Madison Square Garden, and is incredibly rare (which is borne out by the fact that prior to being consigned this poster, we had auctioned 24 examples of the white one without the added tagline, and only one example of the yellow one)! Those 24 white ones were used to advertise an edited version of the fight that was shown at a later time in movie theaters (along with feature films). However, now we have been consigned THIS poster, which is a "white" style, but it also has the added tagline that we had only previously seen on the single "yellow" style! So this means that for that initial closed circuit feed, the promoters made both white and yellow styles with the added tagline, and then only made the white style for the later edited version, and obviously this white style with the added tagline is just as rare as the yellow style, because now we have only auctioned one of each of these! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and pretty minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
