Date Sold 11/4/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A LAMINATED Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Australian One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 40" [69 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) House on Haunted Hill (some stills identify the movie as "House of Haunted Hill" but a collector tells us that he saw the film on the opening weekend and it was titled "House on Haunted Hill"), the 1959 William Castle haunted house horror thriller ("First film with the amazing new wonder Emergo [specially installed for this engagement] The thrills fly right into the audience!"; "The 13 greatest shocks of all time! Consult your doctor! Bring your seat belts! See it with someone with warm hands!") starring Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal, Elisha Cook Jr., Carolyn Craig, Julie Mitchum, and Leona Anderson. Note that the "gimmick" for this movie (Emergo) described above consisted of an actual fake skeleton that was pulled out from above the screen on a wire and dragged across the audience when the skeleton on the movie comes out of its box, and then it is reeled back in across the audience, making two trips. This required special equipment, and apparently many theaters chose not to install it, because the pressbook has special ads for it only for theaters that have the Emergo equipment. We have read that some of the theaters that DID install the equipment had it uninstalled, once teen boys learned of it, because they would come to the showings with slingshots and damage the skeleton with rocks or BBs! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an incredibly rare poster! We have never auctioned it before. 8 years ago, we auctioned a single daybill from this movie and it auctioned for $550, and otherwise, we have not auctioned any Australian items. Note that the Australian poster designer used an image extremely similar to that on the U.S. posters (except that they changed the background color to a cool "blood red"), but due to the strict Australian censorship at this time, the image of the hung girl being held by a rope by the skeleton has been deleted, which makes no sense at all visually! Note that this poster has been laminated! It is quite likely that there is no way to reverse this process. However, I have seen many posters and lobby cards that have been laminated for over 20 years, and the lamination does not hurt the items in any way (and some of the posters were laminated as much as 40 years ago, so it certainly seems that if it were going to damage the item, it would have happened by now!), plus it seems to completely protect them, while allowing them to be easily displayed with no fear of damage. HOWEVER, PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER UNLESS YOU WANT TO PURCHASE A LAMINATED ITEM! The poster is absolutely "roll-able" and will be sent to the winning bidder rolled in a tube. Condition: good. Someone decades ago had the poster laminated. They did not perform any restoration to it prior to lamination, and it didn't need it, because it had extremely minor fold and border wear. However, after it was laminated, it acquired a long diagonal crease in the bottom left, going through the very left of the word "HAUNTED" and ending in the bottom center of the poster. It also acquired some smaller creases in the corners. Also, someone punctured both the lamination and the poster itself in the right red background area, near the edge of the background across from the skeleton's hand (see our image). Whether or not you bid on this extremely rare poster should depend on how you feel about lamination. It surely can't be reversed, but on the other hand, it DOES protect the poster (it has done so for many years and will continue to do so). We don't know if the creases in the lamination can be reduced through any sort of restoration, but we suspect not. In spite of the lamination and the poster's small defects, it will look incredible displayed on the new owner's wall, and it definitely does not need to be displayed behind glass, because the lamination protects it! HOWEVER, PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER UNLESS YOU WANT TO PURCHASE A LAMINATED ITEM! Learn More about condition grades
