Date Sold 5/29/2008Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Other Company Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 10" x 13") (Learn More) Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, the classic 1938 Ernst Lubitsch France romantic idle rich marriage comedy ("He married in haste and repeated with pleasure!"; "Based on the play by Alfred Servoir"; "Screen Play by Charles Brackett & Billy Wilder"; "English Play Adaptation by Charlton Andrews"; about an American multi-millionaire who marries the daughter of a poor French aristocrat, and because she is his eighth wife, she works hard to keep him) starring Claudette Colbert (in the title role), Gary Cooper, Edward Everett Horton, David Niven, Elizabeth Patterson, Herman Bing, Franklin Pangborn, and Rolfe Sedan. Note that this movie combines wonderful direction by Ernst Lubitsch, great writing by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder, and wonderful acting by the leads. It really "has it all"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this was printed by the "other company". This was a company in the Midwest that from roughly 1936 to roughly 1941 printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts and half-sheets) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They never have the name of the releasing studio on the poster or any of the lobby cards. Sometimes, "other company" posters or lobby cards have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters or lobby cards! Also note that this lobby card has been trimmed and now measures 10" x 13". Condition: fair to good. Someone took the card and very neatly cut off all four borders and then mounted it onto a mat with glue. The card was removed from the mat, but there are brown glue stains over the entire back of the card and it has darkened the card somewhat. There are two thin vertical lines of discoloration down the center of the card (to the right of Cooper's head and to the left of Colbert's, and a third partial line in her arm. Certainly, this card has many real defects and is in MUCH lesser condition. But it is also true that any talented restorer could remove the glue stains from the back, bleach the card somewhat, and paperback the card replacing the borders, and after proper restoration, the card will likely look great without requiring much paint restoration. But please do not bid on this card unless you have read the above carefully and can either accept its many defects, or are willing to pay to have them properly restored!
